Pastrami at historic Katz’s

When we were in New York a few weeks ago, we were killing time in between meetings when we bumped into the iconic Katz’s Restaurant in the Lower East Side.

We had salad for lunch and dinner was about two hours away but when on holiday who can resist eating whenever you have the chance to indulge in great food–especially well-known, historic pastrami.

We weren’t the only one. Look at the crowd that was eating at 3 pm! The crowd was proof that the food must certainly be delicious.

The place was bustling with activity. Busy prep chefs sliced away and willingly offered generous pieces of pastrami for us to sample. Which we shamelessly accepted and raved about.

I was like fish drawn into the net by lighted bait. Mesmerized by the busy prep cooks slicing, slicing, slicing the slabs and slabs of pastrami I followed the showcase and ended sampling and buying salami for my daughter. The sellers were rushed but found time to offer customers tastings.

By the time I got to the table where Ted, Russ and his girlfriend Ali were, they had got our one shared pastrami sandwich and had already started eating it! So with no photo op there I elbowed my way back to the counter to take pictures of other people’s food.

I was totally out of line. The cooks told me as gently as New Yorkers can that if I wanted to order I’d have to move in another direction. Oh, I said, I’ve eaten and only wanted to take pictures of them.

So they posed and cut, and put a plate of the deliciousness in my face. And there it is.
